Frequently Asked Questions

Can you advise me on the right product to buy?

Of course we can! Our full team of sales and technical gurus are always on hand to answer any and all questions and queries you might have. Call us now or drop us an email and we’ll gladly help in any way we can with your product choice or offer comprehensive advice on all things IT!

How do I check if a product is in stock?

Because our industry is so dynamic, and new products are coming out daily and other products are being discontinued just as quickly, we recommend you check with us by email or phone to ensure your product is available. If it isn’t we’ll ALWAYS have an alternative to recommend!

How Do I Contact You?

We try and be as contactable as possible at all times! Call any of our 7 branches or email us now – we’ll make sure your query is put in the hands of the nearest guru – whether it’s sales, accounts, technical or even plumbing!

What payment methods do you accept?

Online, we accept all South Africa credit cards. In store, you can pay by cash, EFT, credit or debit cards.

Can I return software to you?

We do not accept any returns on software. This is because most software requires a unique CD or serial key to use and activate online. Once this key or serial has been used, we are unable to resell it. Even if the software is still sealed, we cannot refund or exchange software purchases.

Why is there no cable included with my printer?

Almost all printer manufacturers do not include a cable to connect the printer to the computer as standard. You'll need to purchase a cable as a separate item when you place your order.

What are “bundles” with your notebooks?

Through our experience in retail, we know clients that buy notebooks/laptops often buy certain accessories or other products with them. We’ve taken this knowledge and applied it in an easy-to-use bundle system with the notebooks/laptops we sell.

When you select a notebook from our range, you will be presented with a choice of bundles. All notebooks/laptops come with a free bundle option, but they all have other bundle options that will have an additional cost which is much less than purchasing the items separately.

Simply select the bundle of preference on adding the item to your shopping cart, and our system will work out the rest for you.

How do I arrange a return?

If you need to return any product purchased from us, online or in-store, you have two options for returning it to us, whether for warranty or any other reason.Bring the product in to any of our branches and we’ll book it in for you.Alternatively, you can send it to our head office in Kenilworth, Cape Town via courier, for the attention of our RMA department.

Can I get my data back from something I’ve returned to you?

If you return a faulty product to us which contains (or is) storage media such as a hard drive, flash drive or digital camera - then that data probably won't be on it when you get it back if its repaired. And it certainly won't be there if you get a replacement, so you'll need to back up the data before you return it to us if you can. Chaos cannot hold any responsibility for the recovery or loss of data.

Although storage devices are very reliable and have a life expectancy of several years, we always recommend that you back up your data regularly in case a fault develops. There are many products which are commercially or freely available to help you back up your data.

There are companies who may be able to recover data from a faulty product but this might mean taking the product apart and may invalidate the warranty.
Can I exchange a product?

Chaos offers a 7 day return policy. If at any time within the first 7 days of purchase, you want to return or exchange your product, you’re welcome to do so, provided the product and packaging is 100% complete and resellable. We cannot accept products for refund or exchange on products that are scratched, damaged or products that are blister-sealed or missing any packaging or accessories. For more on product returns please see our returns policy.

How do I return faulty goods?

Chaos has a comprehensive returns policy.

In short, if you do happen to discover anything you have purchased from us is faulty, return it within 7 days and we’ll swap it for a new one. After that we will send it to the warranty provider for repair or replacement. We work very closely with our suppliers to ensure all repairs and warranties happen as quickly and smoothly as possible.

Certain products do carry different warranties – some notebooks come with a collect, repair and return warranty or even an on-site warranty. In these cases, you would contact the manufacturer directly for warranty considerations.
If you have any questions about the warranty procedure, please call or email us and we’ll gladly assist you!
Do you offer extended warranties?

Chaos does not offer extended warranties on their products. Some manufacturers do offer extended warranties on their products. HP, Acer, Dell, Lenovo and many other brands have a comprehensive selection of warranty upgrade options available. Contact the Chaos sales team by email or phone to find out more.

What does OEM and DSP mean?

On certain hardware and software, you will see the OEM or DSP tag in the name.

OEM means Original Equipment Manufacturer and DSP means Delivery Service Partner.
If you buy a product as OEM, it will usually be cheaper than the retail equivalent because you won’t get fancy packaging, user manual, software drivers or installation instructions – because these products are aimed at system assemblers and computer manufacturers (us) to be bundled with full systems.

OEM and DSP software differs from retail software – it can only ever be installed on the computer it is purchased with and cannot be sold separately. With RETAIL software, technical support is offered straight from the manufacturer (if you buy DSP Windows and need assistance, you’d be able to call Microsoft for support). With DSP software, the manufacturer of the COMPUTER or NOTEBOOK is responsible for technical support – so if you buy an HP notebook with Windows included, you’d call HP for technical support on the Windows. Same as if you buy a Chaos system, you’d contact us for technical support on the Windows.
What do I do if there is something missing from my delivery?

While every effort is taken to ensure all our deliveries and orders are perfect, we are human and once in a blue moon, slip ups do happen. Contact us immediately by email or phone, and we’ll do everything we can to make sure you’re entirely satisfied that your order is perfect in no time!

Why are some of the website prices different to the in-store prices?

In-store we have to pay all sorts of expenses – lights, water, electricity, rent… the list goes on. Online, the computer elves that live in the internet work for free – so we can sometimes offer better prices online. While we try and keep all the prices the same, sometimes you will find that they do differ!

Can I collect my order?

Absolutely! When you check out, just select the “buy in-store” option, and we’ll arrange it all for you. Collections are available at any one of our 7 branches! Just let us know which branch is the easiest for you when you check out!

Why does my hard drive appear smaller than the size of the drive?

You may find that the hard drive in your new laptop is reported as being anything up to 20GB less than the original website description. This is quite often due to there being a reserved "partition" on the hard drive which contains all the operating system installation and bundled software and a recovery area.

If the hard drive is a stand-alone or additional drive, it is due to a difference in how your operating system and drive manufacturers see 1 Megabyte. Your operating system takes 1Mb to be equal to 1,048,576 bytes. Hard disk manufacturers on the other hand, assume that 1Mb is equal to 1,000,000 bytes. For example, a 320GB hard disk may be reported as 305GB by the operating system.
